A history of Kashmir written by Kalahana in Sanskrit in the middle of the 12th century. It is a work of rare qual-ity, displaying remarkable clarity and maturity in historical analysis. Earlier historical works in Sanskrit, such as Bana's Harshacharitra (An Account of Harsha) or Bilhana's Vikramanka-deva-charita (An Account of Vikramanka-deva), were biographical in nature. In con-trast, Rajatarangini is a narrative of the history of a region, Kashmir. The book was translated into Persian at the court of Zain al-'Abidin (1420-1470).
